A swim spa is a considered purchase, and the sticker price rarely describes it fully. There is the crane or the delivery crew, a reinforced pad, a dedicated electrical circuit, then a decade of electricity, water and servicing, and finally whatever the unit is worth when you sell the house or trade up. Comparing two models on price alone ignores most of that.

This calculator adds the purchase price to your delivery and site preparation costs, multiplies your annual running and servicing costs by the number of years you plan to keep the spa, then subtracts the resale value you expect at the end. The result is a lifetime figure and the same figure spread per year and per month. It uses only the numbers you enter; it does not assume how efficient a given brand is, and it does not include financing interest.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the delivered purchase price and a realistic figure for delivery, crane, pad and electrical work from your quotes.
  2. Add your expected annual running cost and a servicing reserve, then set how many years you intend to keep the spa.
  3. Adjust the resale percentage to see how much of the cost a future sale recovers, and rerun with a second model to compare.

What the math assumes

  • Annual running and servicing costs are treated as flat for every year; the tool does not apply inflation or rising utility rates.
  • Resale value is a simple percentage of the purchase price applied at the end of the ownership period, with no selling costs deducted.
  • Financing interest, property tax changes and any effect on home value are not included.
  • Site preparation is counted once, upfront, and is assumed to have no resale value of its own.
  • Cost per month divides the lifetime figure by the ownership period in months, so it is an average rather than a cash-flow schedule.

Frequently asked questions

What should I budget for swim spa site preparation?

It depends heavily on access and ground. A level reinforced concrete pad, a dedicated 50 to 60 amp circuit and a straightforward delivery sit at one end; a crane lift over a house and a partial recess sit at the other. Get written quotes and enter the sum here rather than guessing.

Is a resale value of 20 percent realistic?

It is a conservative placeholder. Used swim spas do sell, but the buyer usually has to move it, which limits what they will pay. If you plan to leave the spa with the house, set resale to 0 and think of the value as part of the property instead.

Does a lower lifetime cost always mean the better spa?

Not on its own. An efficient, well insulated unit often costs more upfront and less each year, and the tool shows that trade-off clearly, but swim quality, warranty and service network matter just as much for a high-ticket purchase.
