A luxury hot tub weighs a few hundred pounds on the delivery truck and several thousand once it is full of water and people. Decks, patios and lawns are not always ready for that, and the most expensive mistake in spa ownership is discovering it after the crane has left. Sizing the pad correctly before the order is placed is simple arithmetic that too few buyers do.

Give the calculator the spa's footprint, its dry weight, water capacity and seating count, and the slab thickness you intend to pour. It adds the weight of the water and of a full complement of bathers to the dry weight, divides by the footprint to give the load per square foot, then sizes a pad with a working margin around the spa and converts it into cubic yards of concrete. Use the load figure with your contractor or the spa's installation manual; use the concrete figure to sanity check a quote.

How to use this tool

  1. Copy the length, width, dry weight, water capacity and seating count from the spa's specification sheet.
  2. Enter the slab thickness your installation manual or contractor recommends.
  3. Share the filled weight and load per square foot with whoever is building the pad or reinforcing the deck, and use the cubic yards figure to check a concrete quote.

What the math assumes

  • Water is counted at 8.34 pounds per gallon.
  • Each bather is counted at 185 pounds, with every seat occupied at once, which is a worst case rather than a typical evening.
  • The load per square foot spreads the filled weight evenly across the full footprint; real spas concentrate load on their frame and feet, so treat the figure as a minimum for your contractor.
  • The recommended pad adds a 1 foot margin on every side of the spa, so the pad is 2 feet longer and 2 feet wider than the spa itself.
  • Concrete volume is pad area multiplied by slab thickness with no allowance for waste, footings, rebar or a gravel base; order a little extra.

Can I put a hot tub on an existing deck?

Only if the deck was designed for the load per square foot this tool reports, which is typically far higher than a standard residential deck rating. Have a structural engineer or experienced contractor confirm before delivery.

Why add a margin around the spa for the pad?

The delivery crew needs room to set the spa down, the cover lifter needs clearance, and service panels need access. A pad slightly larger than the footprint also keeps the edge of the slab from bearing the spa's frame.
